Join Leigh Stewart and Alex Blefari for an 8 part morning workshop series to rejuvenate the body's systems through yin postures, hot stones, aromatherapy and guided meditation. Each Saturday, we will explore a different system of the body (reproductive, immune, excretory, nervous, endocrine, skeletal, muscular, and integumentary) with accompanying essential oils and yin postures to promote health, balance and harmony within the body. 

This hour and a half workshop takes place at East West Yoga and The Center SF on Friday evenings from 7:30-9:00pm and Saturday mornings from 9:00-10:30am on the following dates: 

Create: January 6th (Cupertino) & 7th (SF) 2017

  • Body system focus - reproductive system
  • Asana (body work) - fluid yin flow with a focus on the hips to tap into the sacral chakra that provides an outlet to birth new ideas and life. Our practice will culminate with yin-versions to expand the creative energy out of the body and into the universe.
  • Meditation - expansion meditation using shanmukti and ganesha mudras to cultivate trust and activate the power of shifting inward. This class will begin with intention setting and visualization for the new year.
  • Pranayama (breathing) - alternate nostril to balance the two hemispheres of the brain and body (yin/yang, masculine/ feminine, creative/analytical, subtle/expressive). This breath works on flowing energy from one side of the body to the other, and if done properly and practiced regularly, can successfully release 70-80% of toxins in the body.
  • Oil essence - therapeutic grade essential oils for balancing hormones and increasing the vitality of the glands.  

Support: February 3rd (Cupertino) & 4th (SF) 2017

  • Body system focus - immune system
  • Asana (body work) - Postures to stimulate the thymus, the body's center for immunity boosting, through heart opening postures and restorative asanas with extended holds to reduce cortisol production in the body.
  • Meditation - finding peace and self-compassion within, through compassion circle meditation, so you can better bring peace and share compassion with others. 
  • Pranayama (breathing) - centering breath exercise following the breath along the meridian of the body. Creates a sense of grounding for peace.
  • Oil essence - therapeutic grade essential oils enhance feelings of compassion and create a sense of balance within. 

Eliminate: March 3rd (Cupertino) & 4th (SF) 2017

  • Body system focus - excretory system
  • Asana (bodywork) - twist and twist some more. This class will dive deeply into a variety of twisting yin postures to build the heat necessary to eliminate through sweat and the depth needed to aid digestion. 
  • Meditation - spaciousness meditation to promote abundance and the ability to let go.
  • Pranayama (breathing) - breath of fire, a rapid, heat-producing breath that detoxifies your body leaving your cells feelings awakened and refreshed. 
  • Oil essence - therapeutic grade essential oils to support detoxification of harmful environmental pathogens and internal infections/ parasites.

Calm: March 31st (Cupertino) & April 1st (SF) 2017

  • Body system focus - nervous system
  • Asana (bodywork) - targets fight of flight muscle groups in the body, mainly the quadriceps as well as chest openers, connecting the body's increased vulnerability and fearlessness with the calming of the nervous system. The asana portion of this class will explore a trauma-informed approach to movement. 
  • Meditation - infinit hand mudra meditation
  • Pranayama (breathing) - 3 part yogic breath (belly breathing) proven to better oxygenate cells and decrease symptoms of stress and anxiety. 
  • Oil essence - therapeutic grade essential oils to eliminate stress, reduce insomnia, reduce high blood pressure and bring a sense of peace into the body. 

Balance: May 5th (Cupertino) & 6th (SF) 2017

  • Body system focus - endocrine system
  • Asana (bodywork) - yin-versions, inner/interactive postural chanting and an extended yoga nidra to close will support the health of the hypothalamus. Chest and throat openers will explore the mingling of the vagus nerve with the health of the hypothalamus. 
  • Meditation - giving and receiving gesture meditation.
  • Pranayama (breathing) - belly breathing with retention to increase lung capacity and create a sensation of euphoria. 
  • Oil essence - therapeutic grade essential oils to reduce anxiety and stress and bring a sense of balance from within.

Move: June 2nd (Cupertino) & 3rd (SF) 2017

  • Body system focus - skeletal system
  • Asana (bodywork) - alignment-focused postures catering to individualized range of motion with an emphasis on yin props 101. This session will offer a depth of postural variation and speak to the relationship of the skeletal system and flexibility/ range of motion. 
  • Meditation - pitta pacifying meditation to balance movement with stillness as we move into the Ayurvedic season of Pitta
  • Pranayama (breathing) - bhastrika for increased energy, metabolic boost and increased life force within.
  • Oil essence - therapeutic essential oils selected for sharpening the senses and energizing and awakening the mind.

Strengthen: July 7th (Cupertino) & 8th (SF) 2017

  • Body system focus - muscular system
  • Asana (bodywork) - active yin postures to build strength within deep fascia stretches. This class will generate heat and counter our time spent engaging muscles with extended rebounds and postures to release and relax the cervical spine. 
  • Meditation - lotus flower meditation
  • Pranayama (breathing) - lotus flower breathing meditation for increased lung capacity and inner strength building.
  • Oil essence - therapeutic essential oils to support muscle growth and repair.

Protect: August 4th (Cupertino) & 5th (SF) 2017

  • Body system focus - integumentary system 
  • Asana (bodywork) - heating postures to promote sweat, partner poses to stimulate the sensory experience of touch and asana accompanied by homemade herbal skincare to promote the health of skin and nervous system function. This class will culminate with a mindful eating meditation.
  • Meditation - warrior meditation
  • Pranayama (breathing) - breath of fire, a rapid, heat-producing breath that detoxifies your body leaving your cells to feel awakened and refreshed.
  • Oil essence - therapeutic essential oils for boosting the immune system's ability to fight off infection and colds as well as oils to aid in detox of harmful environmental pathogens and internal infections. We will explore lymph brushing with essential oils to stimulate the lymphatic system. 

Breathe: September 1st (Cupertino) & 2nd (SF) 2017

  •  Body system focus - respiratory system 
  • Asana (bodywork) - postures to open the chest, thoracic and heart area to promote ease and intentional breath. We will explore bhandas for maximizing respiratory function. 
  • Meditation - Breathing into compassion
  • Pranayama (breathing) - alternate nostril to balance the two hemispheres of the brain and body (yin/yang, masculine/ feminine, creative/analytical, subtle/expressive). This breath works on flowing energy from one side of the body to the other, and if done properly and practiced regularly, can successfully release 70-80% of toxins in the body.
  • Oil essence - scents chosen to strengthen the respiratory system, dilate bronchial tract and clear congestion for deeper breath.

Digest: October 6th (Cupertino) & 7th (SF) 2017

  • Body system focus - digestive system 
  • Asana (bodywork) - massaging, two sided postures to stimulate digestive movement throughout the body. This practice will work with both physical digestion via the stomach and liver meridians as well as mental digestion via the brain-gut axis. 
  • Meditation - stepping into peace
  • Pranayama (breathing) - breath of fire a rapid, heat-producing breath that detoxifies your body leaving your cells to feel awakened and refreshed.
  • Oil essence - oils chosen to improve digestion by supporting the liver. We will also delve into learning about which essential oils to aid in various digestive ailments. 

Detox: November 3rd (Cupertino) & 4th (SF) 2017

  • Body system focus - lymphatic system 
  • Asana (bodywork) - active postures to promote movement of lymph throughout the body. This practice will move through an active warm up to detoxify the lymph tissue and settle into postures that target lymphatic draining. 
  • Meditation - creating spaciousness
  • Pranayama (breathing) - infinity breathing to calm the nervous system and aid in lymphatic drainage, vitality and function. 
  • Oil essence - oils chosen to promote endocrine function, stimulate lymph tissue and support the body through antioxidant properties.

Circulate: December 1st (Cupertino) & 2nd (SF) 2017

  • Body system focus - circulatory system 
  • Asana (bodywork) - postures to promote circulation throughout the body including stimulating inversions and heat-building postures to compliment the kapha season of winter. 
  • Meditation - circulation of light
  • Pranayama (breathing) - active bellows breath (bhastrika) to invigorate the extremities of the body, increase oxygen to the bloodstream and promote diaphoretic qualities in vital organs.
  • Oil essence - warming essential oils blends to increase blood flow throughout the body.
